April 9, 2025 eblast:

The resilience of Beagles.

It's no wonder we're drawn to them.

We've learned that the beagles we rescue can see themselves through anything.

All they need is one thing.

LOVE.

The more the better, of course, but even a little can change their course.

The result is just like what we see here…

A smiling beagle and her wagging tail.

There's no doubt the person at the shelter taking this picture was speaking sweetly to her.

That's all it took to capture her resilience.

Her Beagle-ness.

Imagine what a foster family could capture!

With her Nestled in all that LOVE.

No more trauma. No more confusion. No more uncertainty.

Her story is hard to tell.

It hurts the heart, especially when hearts like ours beat with such determination for the beagles we're here to save. For beagles that need us the most. Like Pumpkin here.

Saving a Pumpkin in the middle of April.

That's the plan.

We got the message from our friends at the shelter on Sunday.

Pumpkin is as plump as her name suggests and, at only 2 years old, that's certainly a concern for her long-term health.

But there was far more to Pumpkin's story than a weight issue.

Pumpkin arrived at the shelter after being rescued by the police.

She was found in an apartment with her owner but her owner had passed away at least 2 weeks prior to Pumpkin's timely rescue.

The toilet bowl in the apartment was bone dry.

Pumpkin had been drinking from it until there was no water left to drink.

She'd foraged in the kitchen for what little food scraps she could find until there were no crumbs left to lick up.

It's almost a blessing she was carrying extra pounds as it likely saved her life.

But what life was she saving in that moment? A life filled with confusion and uncertainty.

It's hard to imagine her trauma in those two weeks trapped in an apartment.

Judging by the way the shelter staff describe her,

the worst of it would have been the loneliness.

Pumpkin, they tell us, is "so very sweet!" In love with people. In love with love.

But as wonderful as her caregivers are, a shelter is no place for a pumpkin like Pumpkin.

Yes, there are people who are kind to her and there are other dogs in her company feeling just as much uncertainty, but Pumpkin is a long way from HOME.

She bows her head in fear while walking along the hallway surrounded by the unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells of the shelter until she finally reaches the blissful escape of the outdoor run.

There's still so much uncertainty despite being rescued.

But she is resilient nonetheless.

This picture is proof of that.

The moment she feels the sun on her face and the kind voice of the shelter care worker softly encouraging her to smile for the camera, her hope and her faith return.

It shows in her beaming face and the simple wag of her tail.

We're in search of HOME for Pumpkin.

If you're interested in fostering her, please let us know.

If you already foster for us or have in the past, drop us an email.

If you haven't fostered for us before but would like to be considered, don't hesitate to complete a Foster Application which can be downloaded from our web site.

Pumpkin needs what she likely hasn't had in a long while - daily walks in the springtime, quality food, and the life-saving tail-wagging certainty of LOVE.

She would be fine on her own or in the company of a fellow mellow canine companion. Pumpkin needs a peaceful existence to recover from all she's been through.

A pretty backyard would be especially nice too.

THANK YOU for taking the time to read Pumpkin's story.

There's more to it, of course.

The Happily Ever After...that's on us, Pumpkin.
